AN ANCIENT TURNING

Open the stageEach turning traces a fine line between the seen and the unseen.
And so the Sema is less a movement than a threshold.
Established by Sultan Veled (son of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi), the Mevlevi order has carried the language of turning across generations since the 13th century. The Sema gatherings held at Saruhan unfold with a simplicity faithful to tradition and reverent of place. The light withdraws. Stone, sound and time meet in a single rhythm. Here, the Sema resounds.
Balkh, Khorasan. The son of a family of sages. Years later, in Konya, the foundation of an order will rise.
The wedding night, in Konya. Mevlana called death the meeting with the Beloved. The Sema is dedicated to that moment.
With a mutrip ensemble devoted to the ancient ritual, every evening the same silence, the same turning.
Mevlana said: "As long as I live, I am the servant of the Qur'an, the dust on the path of the Prophet." The Sema is that sentence written with the body. The ney is a breath, the kudüm a heart, the semazen a sentence.
The ceremony unfolds in four principal movements. Each contains the previous and opens onto the next. The guest is not a spectator, but a silent witness.
Rumi's legacy: the Sema becomes a silent reading in seven distinct spiritual movements.
Invocation · Vocal
Praise of the Prophet.
Solo · Ney
The ney calls alone.
Knowing · First Turning
The semazen turns.
Surrender · Union
The ecstasy of surrender.
Love · Dissolution
Dissolving in love.
Descent · Return
The descent to earth.
Echo · Closing
The turning rests.
Mevlana's call resounds in the language of instruments — every note a search, every timbre a story of reunion.
The breath of İnsan-ı Kâmil (the perfected human)
It whispers the sorrow of being torn from the reedbed. Not merely an instrument — it is the first sound to which Mevlana said 'listen'; it is the soul's cry of longing for its origin.
The heartbeat of the cosmos
The rhythm born in two small drums is the pulse of the cosmic turning (devran). It transforms the silence of the hall into a heart; the stone speaks at this beat, time breathes at this tempo.
Seventy-two strings · crystalline shimmer
The plectrum gliding over seventy-two strings is the most refined voice of Turkish classical music. Within Saruhan's stone acoustics, each string leaves a shimmer of its own.
A fretless heart
With its pear-shaped body and fretless neck, the ud carries the subtle transitions between makam — the heart of Eastern music. Each string echoes a centuries-old breath.
The first and only Mevlevi Sema ceremony performed in Cappadocia in its full form takes place at our caravanserai. The ambience of a historic structure and its natural light reach into the depths of the soul; we recommend witnessing this ceremony — held every evening — and seeing the timeless caravanserai itself.
Our ceremony begins every evening at 18.00. Please arrive 10 minutes before the start time.
A Deep Sound Journey in a 13th-Century Caravanserai
In the atmosphere of historic acoustics, a singular experience awaits — where you step away from the noise of the modern world and tune in to your own inner frequency.
A silence that has stood firm at the heart of Anatolia for eight centuries. One of the most striking examples of Seljuk architecture; a sanctuary of trust and serenity.
Since 2020 she has carried out guidance work through the Jean Adrienne Purification System; today she blends it with the somatic precision of the Peter Hess® methodology. In her hands, the singing bowls become tuning keys.
"We must awaken, through sound and vibration, the ancient knowledge hidden in our inner silence."
— Burcu Yılmaz
The roots of sound massage reach back five thousand years, to the ancient wisdom of the East. In Eastern thought, the human being is not only body and mind but also a being made of sound. The vibrations of sound act directly upon both the physical and the spiritual nature of a person.
Drawing on this philosophy, Peter Hess developed the singing-bowl method through years of research, adapted it to the Western world, and made it possible for the practice to be used today across many different fields.
The harmonious sounds and vibrations radiating from the bowls move through the body in waves, helping the listener reach a depth of release the conscious mind cannot reach alone. Each cell vibrates, the flow of energy comes into balance, and a profound relaxation settles in.
Developed in 1984 in Germany by Peter Hess, this is a therapy method whose scientific value has been demonstrated and which is widely practised across Europe. It uses high-quality, hand-crafted singing bowls.
Cultivating well-being through sound healing is an ancient and global practice. The essence of sound therapy lies in restoring balance to the autonomic nervous system.
"Fight or flight." High cortisol, racing heartbeat, anxiety, physical exhaustion.
The vagus nerve is activated, heart rate falls, brain waves shift from BETA to ALPHA and THETA.
The aim of a sound bath practitioner is to ease this gentle transition from stress to renewal.
Sound is an ancient instrument able to reach the smallest building block of the body. Selected with somatic precision, these tools tune the body as a whole through controlled vibrations in the 100 Hz – 2800 Hz range. Reminding the cells of their natural rhythm, these frequencies bring deep cellular release and balance across different regions of the body.
Each frequency resonates with a different tissue of the body. During the session the main frequencies below come into play in a deliberate order; each carries a word, an intention, and a somatic task.
Anchors the body to the ground through nature's base frequency. Breath slows, the nervous system settles, and the spine returns to its natural elasticity.
The frequency of cellular repair and love. As warmth softens the chest, the heart's intention meets sound; breath deepens.
The frequency of connection and harmony. Dissolves the residue carried in the throat and shoulders; frees expression and lightens speech.
The frequency of light and awakening. The highest threshold, where the noise of the mind quiets and the doors of clarity and inner silence open.
The Peter Hess Sound Massage is a holistic method that brings balance to body, mind and spirit. Its effects deepen across three layers.
Eases the handling of stress and supports both mental and emotional release. It strengthens self-confidence and helps the individual stay in harmony with themselves. By offering inner peace and calm, it eases decision-making.
Through deep relaxation it loosens the muscles and balances circulation. It eases insomnia and strengthens the immune system. It supports the body in being perceived and accepted just as it is.
Supportive in neurological conditions such as stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and MS. Helps to ease migraine, chronic pain, tinnitus, gastrointestinal and menopausal symptoms; accelerates wound healing.
Suited to anyone seeking mental and physical release, and looking to ease their levels of stress and anxiety.
Lifts the pressure of daily life, calms the mind and brings on deep relaxation.
Supports the rhythm of sleep, eases the mind and helps usher in restful nights.
Reduces muscular tension, balances the flow of energy and offers bodily release.
Strengthens self-confidence, sharpens focus and supports emotional balance.
Sound massage is performed without direct physical manual intervention on the body. Through the deep resonance of sound and vibration, muscle tissue and fascia soften; a sense of bodily relief and healing is supported. It creates the effect of being touched without touch.
Ritual Architect & Sound Practitioner
"Where sound begins, the mind grows still — and the soul begins to hear the music that lives within silence."
My journey rests on the intention of bringing to light, through sound and vibration, the ancient knowledge hidden in the inner silence of the human being. Since 2020 I have combined the guiding work I carry out with the Jean Adrienne Purification System with the thousand-year memory of Saruhan Caravanserai.
I blend my intuitive field-reading capacity with the deep inspiration drawn from the Peter Hess® school, which approaches the physical and energetic body with academic precision.
I position the special-alloy singing bowls I use not merely as instruments but as 'tuning keys' that return body and soul to their natural rhythm. As a Ritual Architect my aim is to lead you, through the somatic safety of the Peter Hess® technique and the depth of intuitive field-reading, to a singular state of well-being.
Practitioner's Note: "My sessions are not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment; they are a complementary practice that supports holistic well-being."
"Guided by Burcu Yılmaz, sound softens the body; the mind quiets, and inner rhythm can be heard again."
